NIH’s commitment to improving public health through scientific research includes leveraging existing and emerging approaches and technologies, often working at the innovative edge of science. Mobile health (or mHealth) is one such emerging technology and research area in which mobile devices are used as tools for research, public health outreach, healthcare training and decision support, and to expand the reach of biomedical and behavioral interventions to remote and underserved populations. Better understanding of disease and human behavior, promoting health and positive behavior change, disseminating health information, and supporting training for scientists are integral to NIH’s public health mission. The mHealth Summit, the mHealth research portfolio, and NIH interactions with others working in the mHealth space are means for the NIH to promote improvements in public health through the use, development, and evaluation of this important technology.
